“Introverts don’t speak” Let me set the record straight
“You just want people to speak because it’s good for your business. Speaking isn’t an introverted thing. Introverts just… don’t do that.”
Yes, I help holistic practitioners grow their practices through speaking. But not because it’s trendy or just good for my business. It’s because it works. Speaking is one of the most powerful ways to educate, inspire, and attract aligned patients & providers, while creating new income streams.
Then I thought about how many people still have misconceptions about what it means to be an introvert & what we’re capable of.
Introverts are not always wallflowers.
Being an introvert doesn’t mean we don’t talk.
Being an introvert means that having to talk to a lot of people all the time can wear us out.
We like our down time of not talking to anyone
…and we tend to require more of it than many extroverts.
Being introverted doesn’t mean we can’t speak–it just means we need to do it in a way that protects our energy and feels authentic. Once I realized that, the way I approached talks completely changed.
Here’s the key: speaking isn’t about performance…it’s about preparation & staying true to yourself when you speak.
I used to find speaking nerve wracking and dreaded it. Preparing for talks felt like homework. But over the years, I developed a process that makes creating talks fun, right brained, and aligned. It allows me to educate and reach more people at once without burning out.
And yes, afterwards I love being by myself to recharge. That’s just part of being introverted. But being introverted isn’t about always hiding…it’s about choosing where your energy goes.
Comments like “speaking isn’t an introverted thing” miss the mark:
They rely on a misunderstanding: being introverted doesn’t mean being incapable or unwilling to speak.
Being an introvert is our superpower. What introverts bring to speaking is thoughtfulness and depth. We connect in a way that feels meaningful and human.
When we are effective & strategic with our approach, we can do less of it while having similar or greater impact (even better than extroverts if I shall say :)…
For us, speaking might look different: just once or twice a month, a small intimate audience, or doing webinars because we don’t have to leave the house. And that’s enough if we are effective.
