should I hire someone or just keep things the way they are? (my answer may surprise you)
I was just watching a video of someone who built her business to 7 figures and shut it down because she realized she didn’t want to manage a team nor feel tied down to feeling like she had to do content creation all the time to educate people.
The main thing she mentioned was that she had quit her 9-5 job because she wanted more freedom in her own business, but then woke up one day realizing she created a business that was out of alignment with her initial desires which was having more freedom.
It made me reflect on how my desires have changed over the years. I’ve had a small team & a large team in this business and now I feel like it’s just the right size.
It also made me reflect on a few other things:
1. One extreme of not wanting to hire because of not wanting to manage people can be limiting.
Many times the fear of hiring comes from never having done it before and concerned about what to expect or from hearing other people’s stories about bad experiences.
If we make decisions mainly based on those things, it limits our own possibility.
It’s helpful to have a reliable system for hiring & training someone + systems that can help you free up your time and have less of a need to manage people.
We’ve seen this happen with our clients who were gun shy at first or had bad experiences before coming to us, but after tapping into our systems & having a better approach, they were so happy they hired.
2. The other extreme is aspiring for more growth & expansion, but primarily be motivated by things that may not be completely true to our own true desires.
For example, feeling that our practice needs to be a certain way in order to be more successful because people you look up to in the profession seem to have practices like that.
If we grow our practice this way, at a certain point in time things will feel out of alignment and we’ll likely start to feel trapped and want to do something drastic.
3. Another possibility is growing & progressively watching profitability going down. Do you feel like you’re working a lot harder for the money than when you were just by yourself?
It can make you question whether it was a good idea after all to have hired staff or team.
The good news is that many times it just requires a business model shift, tweaks in how things are structured, and realignment. But to what & how?
I believe that there’s a sweet spot where there’s a good balance of both, including the right size of support we have for our vision & aspirations, a good work/life balance & flow of money that takes care of us (and people important to us).
If we are afraid to hire because we don’t like the idea of managing people, we will continue to be limited in the number of people we impact & help.
And if something unexpected happens (with us, health, or family, etc), people aren’t being helped & money’s not coming in.
That’s why clients have come to us with different spectrums of desires:
⭐ Some are simplifying for freedom & flexibility while still looking make a difference. So we focus on monetizing their expertise more without having to see more patients or manage a big team.
⭐ Others are expanding because they enjoy the idea of making their big vision available to more people, ie: having different locations. So we help them with the best sustainable & progressive way to grow in a way that feels good.
